History

Founded in 1929, as the Junior Workers League, the name of the organization was changed to the Junior League of Schenectady in 1932 when it became incorporated and a member of The Association of Junior Leagues of America. In 2008 the organization expanded to include members from Saratoga County and was appropriately renamed The Junior League of Schenectady and Saratoga Counties.

Some of our accomplishments over the decades include:

  • Founded the Family & Child Services of Schenectady, Inc.
  • Initiated the Think Tank, a hands on technology learning program in the Junior Museum at the Schenectady Museum, now known as Powerful Idea
  • Established a school for handicapped children, now Clover Patch School and Clover Patch Camp
  • Established Dominion House, the first pilot project in NYS for reintegration of people recovering from mental illness
  • Established Environmental Clearinghouse of Schenectady (ECOS)
  • Established the Schenectady Touring Theater for Children
  • Developed a Scholarship at SUNY Schenectady
  • Refurbished the Green Room and redecorated the Dressing Room; and worked on the Historic preservation of Rozendaal Room at Proctors
  • Organized financial commitment to bring Hospice to Schenectady
  • Created CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates>
  • Established Children’s Grieving Center at Haven
  • Helped create Gilda’s Club Capital District
  • Established Operation Back to School which outfits underprivileged children with school supplies
  • Was one of the first Leagues to join the International Kid’s in the Kitchen program designed to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and teach students about careers in the culinary arts.
  • Created Distributing Discreet Dignity – shining a light on the need for feminine hygiene products in our community shelters.
  • Established the Capital Region Antiracism Training Initiative and weekly public affairs television program Community Conversations
